Vista Point Lake Pleasant Update:

Great surface conditions. 74 degrees with about 15 to 20 foot visibility. Thermocline at about 6 feet drops it down about 1 degree. Comfortable in a 3mm.

There is a thick and murky thermocline at 32 to 37 feet where visibility deteriorates, but still has 5 to 10 foot.

Once you break through the 37 foot thermocline, visibility improves upwards to 30 feet (the deeper you). However, it is a bit darker and temps reduce below 60 degrees. We had decent ambient light at 100 feet and water temp was a brisk 52 degrees.

Truly the coolest spot in Arizona … Have a great weekend diving!

It’s easy to get lost in Long Beach, California. And, when you do, hope you find your way to the area known as “The Pike”.

Several blocks of downtown Long Beach, wedged between the convention center and the aquarium, is a nice little area known as The Pike. What is The Pike? It can easily be described as a large outdoor mall with a Food Court on steroids. Whether you are looking for an old favorite like Chilis or Islands Restaurant, or you are looking for something a little more exotic, it seems to have found its way to the The Pike. Several hotels are nestled into the area and make it a great launching point to visit the Long Beach Scuba Show at the Convention Center.

There is a lot of passion for Scuba diving in this neck of the woods. Californians come from all over the state to visit this great two-day event. However, there are a fair amount of license plates from Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and other surrounding areas as well. This is much more than a local trade show set to inspire diving in the lucky few who live close by.

The Long Beach Scuba Show has a reputation of drawing a good-sized crowd, and 2012 seems to be a year to exceed expectations.

Standing in line around 945am, it wasn’t hard to notice that this year would have great attendance. It was a long line with some very anxious divers. Vendors were rolling by with their last-minute items to put into their booths, and you could tell they were working hard to get everything together before the 10am opening. When the doors to the trade show opened, you can hear the enthusiasm like the starters gun to the Kentucky Derby. As divers funneled in, the vendors were ready to receive them.

As you walked through the turnstile, the show sponsor, California Diving News was the first booth in your sights. A good place to stop and grab your brochure bag. Usually, I am pretty hesitant to grab a bag, hoping to keep my brochure pile low. Trying to stay green this year. However, it wasn’t very long into the show, where I ended up having to go back and find one. Vendors had a lot of high quality information, and I guess there is always recycling when i am done using it.

Crowded? Yes it was. Within one hour of the start of the show, I had already seen a dozen old friends, had my foot stepped on three times and was run into by at least two other people. While many folks would consider this a negative, I found this to be a benchmark to the following two facts: (1) divers were interested in doing business with vendors, (2) diving is becoming more popular. Plus, there were a lot of people looking around. Not necessarily in front of them.

There were over 8 rows which included dozens of dive vendors, manufacturers and destinations in each row. Each one had something special to discuss and often-times would lead into a mini seminar with several people gathering around to hear the lecture. After Sunday’s show, we will highlight many of the vendors and what the new, innovative and favorite products were for everyone at the show.

Have a great Sunday!!!

Academy of Scuba “Dot Org” Announces April Charity Drive

Dot Org initiative to focus on Project Aware in April.

Phoenix, AZ – Tuesday, April 3, 2012 – The Academy of Scuba is proud to announce today that its focus on the Dot Org initiative will benefit Project AWARE throughout the Month. The Dot Org initiative and website is dedicated to mobilizing divers around the country to help with charitable foundations, events, and promotions. “Divers giving back to the community” is the overarching theme. This month, the site is coordinating multiple charitable events and fundraisers benefiting Project AWARE.

About Project AWARE – http://www.projectaware.org

Project AWARE Foundation is a growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet – one dive at a time.

Over the past two decades of underwater conservation we’ve learned that divers are true leaders in ocean protection. We’re ocean heroes numbering in the millions across the globe. We believe together our actions will make a huge impact and will help to rescue the ocean.

With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project AWARE supports an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change.

www.AcademyofScuba.org is the central location for signing up for fundraisers, participating in raffles, learning about causes, and much more. The “Main Event” for the month of April will be a raffle for a Sealife DC1400 Camera. Participants will be able to purchase a raffle ticket for $10 or 7 raffle tickets for $50. One winning ticket will be selected on May 3rd at Academy of Scuba’s Diver Social at the Elephant Bar. 100% of net raffle proceeds from the event will be presented to Project AWARE in early May 2012.

Other activities to help raise awareness and monies for Project AWARE include a number of Specialty Courses that are “environmentally conscious” and educate divers about the marine environment. These courses include The Project AWARE Specialty, a Coral Reef Awareness Specialty and a Shark Conservation Specialty. To learn more about these courses, please go to http://www.academyofscuba.org/april-2012-project-aware-specialty-courses.html. Each course is only $39 and all net proceeds are being donated to Project AWARE. Additionally, the instructors are donating their time.

Additionally, on Earth Day, the Academy of Scuba will be hosting a Lake Cleanup at local dive spot, Lake Pleasant in Peoria Arizona. All proceeds generated by the Cleanup will go to Project AWARE and divers will walk away with a cool T-Shirt! More info and sign up can be found at http://www.academyofscuba.org/april-2012-project-aware-lake-clean-up.html.

“Project AWARE is an amazing organization and one that directly impacts divers,” said John Flanders, COO of the Academy of Scuba. “I can’t think of a more fitting prize than a SeaLife DC1400 to take with our lucky winner on his or her next dive and document the very thing we are all protecting!” Flanders added.

AcademyofScuba.org is staffed by a committee of advisors who ensure the commitment is ongoing and monthly. Committee members include both Academy of Scuba staff members and also independent individuals to ensure the deepest level of commitment on behalf of the initiative. Anyone interested in working with the Committee should contact philanthropy@academyofscuba.com

AcademyofScuba.org is easily accessible through traditional Web browsers and mobile applications. The “Dot-Org” site has streamlined information including contact information, information on fund raising events, and details of the charitable initiatives being supported.

By Evan Coppola, Instructor at the Academy of Scuba

Lake Report for Saturday, January 21, 2012 – Sunset Cove and Besmeyer Point, Lake Pleasant, Arizona.

Water levels are rising steadily and visibility continues to improve week to week, with current visibility ranging from 20 – 25 feet with excellent light penetration. Water temperatures in the low 50s keep water clarity high and provide an ideal training for divers preparing for trips to California or logging drysuit dives. Boating and fishing traffic on the lake is virtually non–existent this time of year, creating a quiet, calm and low–stress diving and learning environment. Solid cloud cover and a steady breeze off the lake made for cool conditions on Saturday morning and shore conditions provided little opportunity to warm in between dives. Air temperatures hovered in the upper 50s and low 60s for much of the morning and divers are advised to bring warm clothing, preferably a long boat coat, to block wind and restore a little body temperature while changing or waiting out surface intervals and dive briefings. Fish and other lake fauna seem to be dormant or wintering in deeper water for the time being. Speaking of lake fauna, the famed Lake Pleasant wild burros were spotted on the ridge near the intersection of Sunset Ridge Road and Desert Tortoise road shortly after 11:30 AM.

Lake Report for Sunday, January 22, 2012 – Vista Cove, Lake Pleasant, Arizona.

Clear skies and only the occasional breeze made for warmer and brighter diving on Sunday as compared to Saturday. With water levels up more than 30 feet since summer, the walk from the Vista Cove parking area to the water line is greatly improved (approximately 1/3 the walk compared to late Summer). Subsurface conditions at Vista closely resemble those on the West side, with water temps in the low 50s and visibility ranging from 20-30 feet when bottom sediment is undisturbed. Vista co\ve tends to remain in the shade of the hills until a bit later in the morning, so preparing for the first dive of the day at 8:00 AM was an invigorating experience, but warming up in the sunshine between dives made for a beautiful day of Arizona diving with air temps around 70. Divers report excellent light penetration and good ambient light and visibility all the way down the wall and to the rail at 80′ and beyond. Students earning their certifications this time of year can be confident in their ability to manage their dives safely in the colder waters of the Western U.S. and West Coast and it is tough to complain about cool water when one realizes that we can dive in January while most of the rest of the country is buried in snow and ice.

Divers planning visits to Vista Cove are advised that the dirt roads South of the parking lot are in good condition while the hill on the North side of the lot (near the wooden steps) is badly rutted in spots – particularly on the right side of the road as one drives uphill. A 4WD vehicle with good ground clearance is advised but not necessarily required.

The sun is starting to set. Your twilight dive is starting to look more like a night dive. You’ve turned around and are following your path back to the boat. As you near the up-line, you see a glowing figure sticking out of the sand. It looks familiar. You reach down for your knife. It’s not there! A look of panic flushes over your face. I just bought that knife you think ….

You murmur through your regulator, “How did I knock my knife out if its sheath?” If it wasn’t for that glow in the dark handle, you never would have seen it. Fortunately, you did. Your retrieve your knife from the sand. You look at the glow in the dark handle and think, “what a nice feature”. As you securely return the knife to its sheath, you end the dive knowing you saved a few dollars today.

Watermark (also known as SeaSoft), long reputed for its high quality and innovative designs, has recently released its Nite Edge™ knife. The Watermark Nite Edge knife is a unique blend of comfort and functionality. The most notable feature is the easy to grip handle that … glows in the dark. As the handle is exposed to light, it absorbs it and then glows for hours. Even on the deepest and darkest dives.

The blade is a 3.2 inch blunt tip BETA Titanium Knife that is subtle in size but supersized for functionality. While you may not be able to cut through a cement block with it (like the as seen on tv folks), you will be able to perform any of the tasks needed on a normal recreational dive.

The Nite Edge sheath is equally as innovative as the knife itself. It has a fantastic one-hand, secure release system – just grab, squeeze and pull. Simple and secure! Notably, it is just as easy to re-sheath your dive knife.

The Nite Edge mounts to your BCD or you can use enclosed webbing for attaching to your legs. The choice is yours. The Nite Edge is available in an array of colors including black (or as I like to call it stealth), blue, clear, yellow, and hot pink.

Dot Org initiative to focus on Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba in January.

Phoenix, AZ – Wednesday, January 11, 2012 – The Academy of Scuba is proud to announce today that its focus on the Dot Org initiative will benefit Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba (SUDS) throughout the Month. The Dot Org initiative and website is dedicated to mobilizing divers around the country to help with charitable foundations, events, and promotions. “Divers giving back to the community” is the overarching theme. This month, the site is coordinating multiple charitable events and fundraisers benefiting SUDS.

About SUDS

Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba (SUDS) is designed to help improve the lives of injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. By training the warriors in a challenging and rewarding activity it can help facilitate the rehabilitation process and promote mobility. Offering this venue provides the veteran with a sport they can enjoy throughout their life. SUDS is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization & a chapter of Disabled Sports USA.

www.AcademyofScuba.org is the central location for signing up for fundraisers, participating in raffles, learning about causes, and much more. The “Main Event” for the month of January will be a raffle for a Plate from the Wreck of the Andrea Doria recovered by “Shadow Diver”, John Chatterton. Participants will be able to purchase a raffle ticket for $5. One winning ticket will be selected on January 29th. 100% of raffle proceeds from the event will be presented to SUDS in early February 2012.

The Andrea Doria was the flagship of the Italia Line and a source of Italian national pride post World War II. On July 25, 1956, bound for New York City, the Andrea Doria collided with the eastward-bound Stockholm becoming one of history’s most famous maritime disasters.

Today the Andrea Doria lies at the bottom of the Atlantic in approximately 250 feet of water sixty miles south of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. It has dramatically deteriorated since it first went to the bottom.

The plate will have an accompanying certificate of authenticity to certify that the artifact described herein was recovered by John Chatterton from the wreck of the Andrea Doria.

This artifact is identified as:
Dinner plate from second class dining room with ITALIA marking

DAN’s Alert Diver magazine has once again taken the industry-leading publication to a new level; the must-read quarterly is now available in a digital version for the iPad.

“Just as we are fully committed to ever-improving the quality of our print product,” said Stephen Frink, publisher of Alert Diver, “we also realize there is a global audience for Alert Diver, and reaching them is important. Alert Diver readers travel extensively, and the magazine’s core information on research, education and medicine may help if a problem occurs away from home. We want to be there for our members, and it’s easier to take an archive of Alert Diver on a tablet than to tote print copies in a backpack.”

Released with the Fall 2011 issue, the digital version features all of the great content contained in the print pages along with bonus content. Additional special and expanded features are expected to be added to issues throughout 2012.

The digital Alert Diver can be viewed on either the iPad or the iPhone. The application is free to download, and the inaugural issue is available at no cost to anyone who wants to view it. Beginning with the Winter 2012 issue, DAN Members can continue to access Alert Diver for the iPad at no cost, as the digital subscription is automatically included with DAN Membership. Nonmembers or those who live outside the DAN America territory will be able to purchase issues individually.

The digital Alert Diver is available only on the iPad for now, but development is already under way to expand its availability to Android tablets as early as Winter 2012.

“The multimedia aspect of the iPad is so exciting to us,” Frink said. “Now we can celebrate the beauty beneath the sea with additional videos and slide shows. Just as the print version of Alert Diver has evolved and improved, we are proud to bring our members valuable new content via our digital editions.”

To download, simply visit iTunes and search the AppStore for “Alert Diver.” From there, download the free app, load your content and enjoy!

AcademyofScuba.org launches today as an organizational hub for divers wanting to give back to the community.

Phoenix, AZ – Friday December 16, 2011 – The Academy of Scuba is proud to announce today that it has launched a site dedicated to mobilizing divers around the country to help with charitable foundations, events, and promotions. “Divers giving back to the community” is the overarching theme. The site will coordinate multiple charitable events and fundraisers benefiting a wide spectrum of charities.

While most philanthropic efforts in the dive community have a tendency to dedicate themselves to environmental causes and marine life protection, AcademyofScuba.org is intent on expanding that charitable attitude to foundations that are closer to home – and still work with efforts protecting the Marine Environment.

AcademyofScuba.org will be the central location for signing up for fundraisers, participating in raffles, learning about causes, and much more. Every month will have a dedicated focus to helping a specific cause. For the month of December, AcademyofScuba.org will be focused on raising charitable proceeds for the Salvation Army. One event will be a raffle for an Atomic B2 Regulator. Participants will be able to purchase a raffle ticket for $5. One winning ticket will be selected on December 24th. Net proceeds from the event will be presented to the Salvation Army before the end of 2011.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to work something as a united front … a real community,” said John Flanders, COO of the Academy of Scuba. “The Academy of Scuba is proud to be a part of something so socially conscious! We believe this initiative is a strong commitment to helping others inside and outside the dive community,” Flanders added.

August 17, 2011 – Phoenix AZ: The Academy of Scuba through its wholly owned travel division, Underwater Vacations, today announced three (3) trips for Lake Mohave / Laughlin Nevada during the fall 2011. Lake Mohave offers Scuba divers a great fresh water destination with plenty of visibility and diversity. Additionally, when “off-gassing”, Scuba divers can enjoy the entertainment of Laughlin Nevada just a few minutes away.

Lake Mohave is the Scuba jewel of the Southwest United States. Reputed with visibility upwards of 80 feet and sites that include old mine shafts, school buses and multiple small wrecks, Lake Mohave is a great option for people looking for a quick and easy get away with consistent dive conditions. Lake Mohave offers easy access by shore and dive boat. Beginners love Lake Mohave because it is easy with a lot to see. Advanced Scuba Divers enjoy Lake Mohave because it has plenty of depth and an abundance of “non-traditional” dive sites. Whether you are an underwater hunter or someone looking to see small inland wrecks, Lake Mohave has your diving experience readily available within minutes of lake’s gates.

Academy of Scuba will be escorting trips in September, November and December. Boat diving, shore diving, and 2 nights hotel stay are all included for less than $200 for the weekend. For complete details and to sign up, go to http://www.underwatervacations.com/lake-mohave.html. The trips are escorted by the Professional Staff at the Academy of Scuba. For maximum enjoyment, space is limited to 12 people per trip.

About Lake Mohave

The season is in full swing and our community is doing a lot of diving throughout the Southwest United States. We’ve had trips to Southern California, Lake Mohave and plenty of Lake Pleasant diving. Recently, we just returned from an amazing trip at the Bonne Terre Mines just outside of St. Louis. A great time by all who attended and several people won some great prizes (like a trip to the Bahamas) during the Bonne Terre Treasure Hunt.

Feel like you have missed the proverbial dive boat? Don’t!

There are still plenty of opportunities to dive this summer. Check out our up and coming shop trips:

San Carlos Mexico – July 2011 – Dive the Wreck of the Poseidon’s Mistress

San Carlos is a sleepy little dive town that comes alive during the summer months with divers hoping to see the spectacular sights of Jacques Cousteau’s Aquarium of the world. The Sea of Cortez is home to hundreds of unique marine life species. It is world class diving on the border of the Sonoran desert.

I have a mantra when it comes to purchasing Scuba diving equipment, “buy right and buy once”. Sound advice, especially when it comes to life support equipment. Purchasing a BCD is one of the most expensive components most recreational scuba divers will make. It is also one of the most overlooked pieces when it comes to cleaning and maintenancing. It’s a common occurence to stand next to someone suiting up for a dive, look at their BCD and see “salty crud” stuck to the outside. You can only imagine what infestation lives inside of it. This “lack of maintenance” is not only financially fool-hearty, it is also a safety issue. There are many components of a BCD that need to be clean and well maintained in order to properly and safely execute a dive. Think about it, nothing scares me more than a stuck inflator button and a rusty low pressure inflator hose that needs to be disconnected in a hurry before an uncontrolled ascent.

Some tips to keep your gear in good working order:

1. Have a professional Scuba technician maintenance your BCD regularly and at least according to the specifications outlined by the manufacturer.

2. Make sure it fits correctly and you are properly trained in using the equipment.

3. Disconnect all hoses after finished diving. Inspect and clean all hoses including the corregated hose for damage, cuts, slices, and splits. Remove and inspect weight pockets. If velcro weight pockets, then inspect velcro and clean with toothbrush. Don’t leave any dirt in the velcro. If they are locking weight pockets, make sure they snap back into the BCD with a loud snap. Weak snaps may mean a loose connection. In either case, make sure pockets release easily – but not too easily. Remove all knives and empty pockets. Clean independent of BCD.

4. Soak outside of BCD in fresh water after every day of diving. The longer the better, but don’t get crazy.

5. Fill BCD with water and air. Rinse the inside thoroughly. Shake vigorously with air and water inside the bladder. Repeat at least twice.

6. Make sure water runs through the Inflator Valve (inflate BCD with water and air and empty through inflator valve by holding the hose low and deflating). Use toothbrush to scrub around the inflator and deflator buttons. Repeat at least twice.

7. Fill bladder up with air and fresh water. Use dump valves to empty bladder. Make sure fresh water runs through dump valves. Remove and inspect dump valves. Look for rust on springs. Replace if rusty.

8. Inflate Bladder to full. Hold underwater. Inspect seams of bladder for leaking air. If leaking air, bring to Scuba Technician.

9. Hang Dry. Do not lie on the concrete floor.

10. When Dry, inspect thoroughly. Look for salt stains or dirt. If you find them, spot clean or repeat completely.

Consider using McNett’s BCD Life as a cleaning agent.
